Families of residents at the Ehpad Granvelle care home in Besancon, in the Doubs department, are demanding explanations after learning that no staff member was present overnight between August 8 and 9, according to a report by L'Est Republicain. Close to a hundred residents were housed at the facility that night, which includes two units dedicated to people with Alzheimer's disease or related conditions.

A collective of families formed in response and sent a letter to the home's management on August 12. The letter states that some residents spent part or all of the night in their wheelchairs, still fully dressed, with their incontinence protection unchanged.

In a message dated August 11, the facility's director said initial findings from an internal review indicated that the staff scheduled for the night shift never actually began their shift. Management described the episode as an exceptional situation and said it had since put measures in place to secure the facility's staffing arrangements going forward.

Families say that response has not reassured them, and point to what they describe as chronic understaffing and a decline in the home's day to day operation over recent months. Monthly costs at the facility run around 3,500 euros. The families' collective has notified the regional health agency, the ARS, and is now considering filing a formal complaint so the circumstances of that night can be examined.
