Three Thousand People Turned Up in Funchal for a Wedding That Was Not Cristiano Ronaldo's

Around 3,000 people gathered outside the cathedral in Funchal on Saturday 8 August, on the island of Madeira, in the belief that Cristiano Ronaldo was getting married inside. Fans, residents and tourists already on the island began assembling in the morning. When the doors finally opened, the couple who stepped out were Fatima Nicole Cunha Teixeira and Fabio Santos Ramos, two Madeirans who now live in France.

The chain started with the British tabloid The Sun, which reported that a significant wedding was booked for that Saturday at the cathedral in Funchal, the city where Ronaldo was born. The surrounding detail made it look solid enough. Ronaldo and the Argentine-Spanish model Georgina Rodriguez announced their engagement last year and had been photographed days earlier on a yacht off Majorca wearing diamond rings, and a prestigious hotel in Funchal was reported to have been partly closed to the public for the weekend.

From there it moved the way these things move. The report circulated internationally within hours, and by the afternoon the cathedral had shut its doors, which the crowd read as confirmation rather than as what a church normally does during a private ceremony. According to the Diario de Noticias da Madeira, that was the point at which the remaining sceptics were persuaded. Neither Ronaldo nor Rodriguez had confirmed anything, as SIC Noticias noted.

The mechanics are worth naming because they are not particular to this case. A tabloid publishes an unconfirmed claim, aggregators repeat it without the qualifier, and each retelling drops a layer of doubt until a rumour has the texture of a fact. Nothing was verified anywhere along that chain. What made it visible this time is that the error had a fixed address and a scheduled hour, so several thousand people could turn up and discover it in person.

Two of the actual guests, speaking to the Diario de Noticias da Madeira, said the scene left them feeling famous, and observed that it was striking anyone believed Ronaldo would get married with no security present. That is the sharpest thing said about the whole episode, and it came from somebody standing on the cathedral steps rather than from any newsroom.

For Fatima and Fabio the day worked out in a way no wedding planner could arrange. They were married in the cathedral of the town they come from and walked out into a crowd of three thousand strangers and a bank of press cameras, none of whom had come for them and all of whom stayed anyway.
